The AI Paradox: When Smart Tools Make Us Lazy Thinkers
Been mulling over something that’s been bugging me for weeks now. The comparison to an intern who never learns really hits home. Every time you close that chat window, you’re starting from scratch. Yet we’re structuring workflows around these tools as if they were experienced team members rather than very sophisticated but fundamentally limited assistants.

We’re burning through energy at an unprecedented rate to create tools that, in many cases, are being used to avoid learning skills that humans have been developing for decades. There’s something deeply unsustainable about that equation.

There are still plenty of professionals who recognise the value of expertise and are thinking critically about how to integrate AI tools without losing essential human capabilities. The key insight for me is that we need to be much more intentional about how we implement these tools. Instead of marketing them as expertise replacements, we should be positioning them as expertise amplifiers. Tools that help experts work more efficiently, not tools that make expertise unnecessary.
Maybe what we really need is a fundamental shift in how we think about professional development. Rather than seeing AI as a shortcut to avoid learning, we could frame it as an advanced tool that requires sophisticated understanding to use effectively. Like any powerful instrument, it should enhance the capabilities of skilled practitioners rather than replace the need for skill altogether.
The future doesn’t have to be a choice between human expertise and artificial intelligence. But getting to a better outcome will require us to resist the siren call of “no expertise needed” and instead focus on building tools and practices that make human expertise more valuable, not less.
